MELAKA’s SK Convent Infant Jesus (1) is organising an online international robotics competition for primary and secondary school students.

Jointly organised by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), the competition – now open for registration – aims to raise public awareness of environmental sustainability through robotics.

The school said in a statement that the competition, which is expected to end in August, also aimed to let students both locally and globally to showcase their knowledge and creativity.

Students passionate about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) can use it as a platform to bring their concepts and ideas to the fore.

The initials of the school CIJ have also been used to represent various outcomes for the competition — C for creativity, I for innovation and J for joviality, while the number 1 represent the top spot.

The theme of the competition is “Robots and Sustainability”, in line with policies fostering a change in the mindset and attitude of the community on aspects of family, community, and environmental hygiene.

Merging robotics and the environment can help participants in caring for nature and their surroundings as well as get meaningful problem-based learning.

It has junior and senior categories, and each team is required to have a mentor.

The participants and their mentor will work together to invent and design.

Participating teams are to submit a video recording of their project which will then be judged by a panel.

This competition approved and supported by Education Ministry is also being carried out with the support and collaboration of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry.
