St Columba Anglican School’s Iona Fusion robotics team compete in Texas, USA

Robotics students at St Columba Anglican School are on a high having recently returned from competing in Houston, Texas. The group of eights students and their mentor headed to the States during the April school holiday to take part in the First Robotics Competition. The major international competition had representatives from countries all over the world with over 400 teams competing. Part of team Iona Fusion, St Columba students Alex Reynolds, Thomas Crundwell and Pippa Davis said the whole trip was incredible. “We were in Houston for six days, four days for the competition and two days for exploring,” Thomas said. “It was super fun getting to go to NASA as well as seeing all the robots from around the world trying to do the same thing as us.” “It was a massive competition and it was really cool to see all the different designs people had come up with,” Alex said. “It was interesting that the best designs were some of the most simple and it has definitely given us something to think about for next year.” Pippa also said the trip was an eyeopening experience. “The competition in Houston was probably six times the event we went to in Sydney so to see all the different ideas was really great,” Pippa said. “We thought our robot was pretty good but when we got there we saw all different kinds and it was so cool to go around and ask everyone about their robot design. “We asked lots of questions and are keen to try out some of the things we learned.” Robotics mentor Warren Reynolds said he was incredibly proud of the group. “They did such a great job at the competition and I am just so proud,” Mr Reynolds said. “All the team members put in so much hard work and in the three weeks between finding out about Texas and going there was a lot going on. “We want to thank everyone who helped us and especially our sponsors who got us over the line.” While you’re with us, you can now receive updates straight to your inbox from the Port Macquarie News. The group of eights students and their mentor headed to the States during the April school holiday to take part in the First Robotics Competition.
