Two-thirds: Local ACME Robotics team wins six of nine matches at the worlds competition in Houston

Back in March, it was an offer.

In April, it became a Texas reality.

From April 17-20, the ACME Robotics team, comprised of various Nevada County high school students, went to the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology World Championship in Houston. The team finished 22nd out of 160 total teams, many from around the world, said team mentor Stephanie Lewis.

“The team did really well,” she said, winning six matches and losing three.

Seven of the eight ACME teammates attended the event, helping the team become finalists for the software control award.

“They were really excited,” said Lewis. “Everyone was really happy. The robot worked very well.”

Having been to worlds last year, Lewis said this was the first time the team didn’t have major problems, a testament to the design and construction of their robot.

The mentor said the team also earned the “Gracious Professionalism” award for their past community service and for carrying themselves with dignity and respect throughout the year.

The team is now working to rebuild the program and replace graduating seniors.

“We’re kind of in the middle of recruiting right now,” said Lewis.

ACME Robotics will be putting on a robotics camp from June 10-20 for fourth through eighth graders.
