Rockwall-Heath HS Black Hawk Robotics Place 2nd at the World Championships

(ROCKWALL/HEATH, TX – May 22, 2019) The Black Hawk Robotics Team (FRC team 3310), from Rockwall-Heath High School, recently placed second at the FIRST World Championship in Houston where more than 400 teams from nine countries competed for the world title.

“I am very proud of my students,” said Leslie Reese, coach for the Black Hawk Robotics Team. “They worked extremely hard to fix problems, refine mechanisms, design new parts, perfect the programming and practice throughout the season to make their robot perform at the highest level. It was truly a team effort to achieve these accomplishments.”

The Black Hawks won the Turing Division, one of six competing divisions and went on to compete in the Einstein Round Robin elimination round. The Black Hawks came out undefeated in the Einstein elimination round and went on to compete in the Einstein finals in Minute Maid Stadium, where they won second in the world.

“Every member of team 3310 has put in countless hours into the design, creation and competition of their robot,” said Reese. “Truly, the success of this team has been due to the outstanding efforts and dedication of its incredible members, mentors and parents.”

Students have logged more than 150 hours into the success of their team and have worked tirelessly throughout the entire season.

The Road to Victory

The Championship consisted of 404 teams from across the world, 66 of which were in the Turing Division. After 10 qualification matches in the Turing Division, the Black Hawks were ranked third with a record of 9-1-0. Team 3310 partnered with top seed team 254, Cheesy Poofs, from San Jose, California, team 6986, PPT Bots, from Nanjing, China and team 948, NRG, from Bellevue, Washington. This alliance went undefeated through the three elimination rounds (6 matches) to win the Division.

The Black Hawks, along with their alliance, went undefeated through the five elimination rounds during the Einstein Round Robin semifinals where they earned a record-breaking score of 141 points, thirteen points higher than the previous world record which was also set by the Black Hawks. After the semifinals the Black Hawks competed in Minute Maid Park where they battled for the world title. After three grueling matches, the Black Hawks and their alliance finished second in the world, equaling the team’s finish from the 2017 season.

FIRST is a global organization created to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders through after school robotics programs and competitions. Each year teams design a robot that can complete a specific set of tasks. This year’s game, FIRST DESTINATION DEEP SPACE, involves building a robot that can work in a team of three to pick up ‘cargo’ balls and hatch panels and place them into a ‘cargo ship’ in the center of the field and rocketships, which are both elevated seven feet on either side of the field. Teams must also climb onto a platform towards the end of the game, which is 22 inches tall.
