MANILA – The Philippine Robotics National Team has emerged victorious after bagging two coveted awards in the recent For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Lego League World Championship held in Houston, Texas in the United States.
The delegation is composed of DYCI Blue Ocean’s 10 from Dr. Yanga’s College (12-17 age bracket), which won the Champion’s Award Finalist, and CYLLO from De La Salle Zobel (6-12 age bracket), which bagged the Explore and Discover Award.
DYCI Blue Ocean’s 10’s work called “Project Fuse” bested 109 teams from 74 countries.
Team members include Jocas Arabella Cruz, Abigail Silva, Denise Carpio, Naiah Nicole Mendoza, Raingel Vryse Mendoza, Rodel Christian Alcantara, Ma. Anne Geline Doneth Dela Rama, Paul Jaren Perez and Lara Monique Narciso. They were led by head coach Beryl Jhan Cruz and assistant coach Lemuel Francisco.
“Project Fuse” is a virtual reality game that connects astronauts in space to their families on earth through a live virtual reality video chat with physical interaction through a robot.
The project was the group’s design for this year’s “INTO ORBIT” challenge that sought to find ways on how to solve physical and social problems associated with long-duration space flight.
Meanwhile, Team CYLLO won the award for the challenge “MISSION MOON.” Their project aims to solve the problem of supplying enough food and oxygen to astronauts on the moon by creating a robot that can sustain the life of cyanobacteria. The team bested 43 countries.
The team is composed of Zoie Francesca Aldave, Chito Salunga Roxas Jr., Franc Andre Dimatatac, Eduardo Matteo Valdez, Emmanuel Jace Savellano, and Robert Philip Lim, led by head coach Heinz Elorde and assistant coach Genevieve Pillar.
The FIRST Championship brought together tens of thousands of students from around the world who participated in the K to 12 Robotics program.
The Philippine Robotics National Team is set to compete again at the FLL European Open Championship in Izmir, Turkey from May 20 to 27, 2019.
