Edina Green Machine

A team from Edina High School became the first ever Minnesota winners of the FIRST Robotics Competition Championship.

Known as the Green Machine, the group of Edina students won the highest honor at the competition in Detroit on Saturday as they picked up the Chairman’s Award, which “honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST.”

The championships see teams of 25 or more students build and program robots to perform challenging tasks in competition with other schools.

As the FIRST website notes, they must also fundraise, design a team “brand,” perfect their teamwork skills and perform community outreach as part of their collaboration.

Since its inception in 2006, one of the core aims of the Green Machine has been to “promote value, and celebrate STEM,” with the Star Tribune noting the FIRST judges commended the Edina team’s work in pushing for local and national legislation that supports STEM learning.

Among those congratulating Edina HS was Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, who said: “Always been proud of our kids across the state and country who participate in robotics competitions. This time Minnesota sent the winning national team. Congrats!”
