More than 40,000 people from across the world were drawn this weekend to downtown Detroit for robotics events involving K-12 students, culminating with the FIRST Robotics World Championship on Saturday at Ford Field.

Several Michigan teams were among those involved in the space-themed competitions that started Wednesday. They used robots to complete tasks such as sealing a chamber with a hatch, inserting a large dodge ball into a cylinder and climbing a step 19 inches high.

Participants developed skills ranging from engineering and coding to marketing, fundraising, brainstorming and teamwork as they prepared to compete. Several downtown venues hosted associated events and activities, including Cobo Center, Beacon Park, Campus Martius Park and others.
