The Queen and the Duchess of Cambridge met a robot and visited a roof terrace overlooking London on their first joint engagement outside Buckingham Palace.

Her Majesty, 92, and Kate, 37, appeared in high spirits as they visited King’s College London to open Bush House, new education and learning facilities on the Strand Campus.

The pair toured the facilities and met supporters of the development, as well as admiring city views on a rooftop boasting panoramic views of the UK capital, with Kate describing the sight as “impressive”.

The Queen and her granddaughter-in-law viewed a robotics demonstration which included a robotic surgery and a demo showcasing how sensors made from textiles can measure useful information about the body.

Kate, who was wearing a bespoke grey Catherine Walker coat for the engagement, shook a robotic hand and joked: “Very nice to meet you”.

They then visited the King’s virtual trading floor and met with students from the Entrepreneurship Institute which supports entrepreneurial thinking, skills and experiences amongst King’s students, staff and alumni.

Kate spent time with entrepreneur Aysha Ingar, who set up an app for Muslim women, and Tobi Oredein, who founded a media platform for black women in the UK.

After meeting the duchess, Ms Oredein said: “She was saying that her parents are entrepreneurs so she’s all for it.”

Kate also met Qasmin Munye, who set up the app Shortly for people who want to read short stories on the go.

He said: “She mentioned that she thinks it would be good for her children before they go to sleep.”

Mr Munye said his conversation with the duchess inspired him to add stories for children to the app.

The royals ended their visit in the development’s new auditorium, where the Queen, who is patron of the university, unveiled a plaque to formally open Bush House, before signing the visitors’ book with Kate.

Although this is the Queen and Kate’s first solo engagement outside the palace walls, the duchess joined the Queen and Prince Philip in 2012 for the start of the Queen’s Jubilee tour in Leicester.

The royals have also teamed up on several engagements within the palace, with the Queen viewing Kate’s wedding dress during a private tour of a new display at Buckingham Palace in 2011.
