First-year teachers get free school supplies
More than 300 new teachers were invited to the school district’s Supply Zone to stock up on school supplies. At the “Start Right, Stock Up” event March 14, teachers got the chance to get free supplies and books, thanks to a grant from the Palaniyandi Pillai Endowment Fund.
The event was started to help alleviate some of the financial burden on teachers. The Supply Zone is a nonprofit resource center, founded in 2014, for teachers in low-income communities. Since its creation, it has given away $3 million in supplies.
Students compete in first Innovation Games
Students from the district’s elementary, middle and high schools, as well as the county’s charter and private schools, participated in the inaugural Innovation Games on March 8. Students competed in computer coding, drone racing, and designed underwater vehicles, carbon dioxide dragsters, catapult design and gliders.
The event was sponsored by the Air Force Technical Applications Center, Aethervision, CodeCraft Works, Horace Mann Companies, Harris Corp., Larsen Motorsports, NASA, Northrop Grumman, UCF Florida Solar Energy Center and the Air Force.
Relay for Life in South Brevard
The American Cancer Society will host the annual Relay for Life event April 6 at noon at the Space Coast Field of Dreams to raise money and awareness to fight cancer. Last year, the even raised $50,000.
A student from West Shore Jr./Sr. High, Kishen Mitra, has so far raised a record amount of money, nearly $19,000. For more information, visit www.RelayForLife.org/SouthBrevardFL.
Art teachers receive scholarships
Six teachers received Nancy Baur Dillen Art Teacher Scholarships through the Community Foundation for Brevard. The scholarship pays for a week of workshops at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee. The winning teachers are: Enrique Cortes of Palm Bay Elementary, Marisa Flint of Edgewood Jr./Sr. High, Marguerite King of Cape View Elementary, Amanda Lewis of Lockmar Elementary, Carina Rachow of Astronaut High, and Annamarie Zink of Eau Gallie High.
Adult education offering pre-apprenticeship program
The Brevard School District’s Adult Education program is now offering a pre-apprenticeship program for students to get experience in trades. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call 321-633-3660 ex.147 or visit www.BrevardAdultEd.com.
Cocoa Beach cadets clean up community
Students from the Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School JROTC program will host a cleanup event April 6 at 8 a.m. at Taylor Park in Cocoa Village. The cleanup is in partnership with Keep Brevard Beautiful.
Earlier this year, the Cocoa Beach JROTC organized a campus cleanup event. About 75 students earned community service hours by taking part in the annual Operation Tiger Pride.
Brevard schools excel in robots competitions
Local robotics teams took top awards at the FIRST Robotics Competition at the UCF CFE Arena. The competition included high schools from across the globe.
Melbourne High School’s team, as well as a team of students from Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High, Rockledge High, Space Coast Jr./Sr. and Viera High School, won the Orlando Regional Championship. They will advance to the FIRST World Championship in Houston, Texas in April.
Cook-off helps build playground
The city of Cape Canaveral is hosting its annual Founder’s Day Festival at which a chowder cook-off will help raise money to build a new playground at Cape View Elementary. The event is April 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Manatee Sanctuary Park. At the festival there will also be live music, local history exhibitors, bounce houses, inflatable obstacle courses and a craft table. Speech contest open to Brevard students
The Florida Space Coast Council of the National Management Association Leadership Association is accepting speech contest applications from local students. High school freshmen to seniors are eligible to enter. The speech’s topic must relate to leadership. Students can win up to $5,500.

Students raise awareness for Huntington’s Disease
