PROVO, Utah (ABC4 News) – Mechanical engineers at Brigham Young University have created an inflatable robot that’s designed to be safe and “people-friendly.”

“Traditionally, robots are pretty dangerous so there are lots of places we think soft robots have some nice applications,” said BYU robotics researcher Marc Killpack, a professor of mechanical engineering.

BYU says the robot’s name is King Louie and was programmed entirely in-house by BYU students and faculty.

The robot is made up of fabric and its interior is said to be similar to a bike tire. Individual sections or joins are inflated to create movements which are controlled via microchip.
